It won the Grammy Honor for Best Vocal Written for Visual Media, a year subsequently the album's lead single "Shallow" won in the aforementioned category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting set up to film the final scene of A Star Is Built-in, where she sings "I'll Never Love Again", the singer got a call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her terminal moments of Stage Iv cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, simply she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta practise what Sonja would desire you to do", so she returned to the fix. Co-star and managing director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss but Gaga was determined virtually finishing the scene, and so she stepped on the gear up and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The vocaliser said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to [the] ready, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same 24-hour interval within an hour."[one]

Along with the film version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[ii] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[four] The song is performed in the cardinal of G major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per infinitesimal in common time. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Chiliadadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'south vocals bridge from K3 to East5.[5] Brian Truitt of Usa Today described the vocal as a "weepy" carol.[6]

Release and operation [edit]

The song was first chosen every bit the 3rd unmarried from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[seven] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the United States[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 million streams.[9] Additionally, the vocal has reached the summit 10 position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the peak x of digital charts in Greece, Spain and Grand duchy of luxembourg, reaching the chart summit in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[x] The magazine's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's performance of "I'll Never Honey Once more" as the film'south best scene and wrote, "Not but are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, but Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-high range."[xi] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson'southward "Without Yous" and Eric Carmen's "All past Myself", and complimented Gaga's "old-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung ability".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice chosen the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Dearest Over again' is enough constructive on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the same manner the picture show does: jumping back in time from Gaga's time-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that merely enhances the song'south emotional quotient".[13]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston World said Gaga's "climactic memorial" operation of the song "will leave you a soggy mess whether yous like it or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.[xv] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Once again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about beloved and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent achievement that could single-handedly net the singer-turned-actress her first Oscar, reminding us yet once more that she's one of the best vocalists right now in any genre, pop or otherwise."[16]
