Dell Inspiron 1501
At boot up, for a couple of weeks.... so it must be charging. The consensus seems to be to replace to battery.
I come to the place that I trust for more concrete info....even if it is to replace.......

You may want to take a look at this forum solution:

The second to the last post shows his solution, hopefully it will work for you.
Instead of updating his BIOS, he downloaded the original from the Dell site and ran it, his problem was fixed. I read many complaints where people had the same problem with Dell laptops, but changing the battery didn't seem to fix them.
Be sure to read the cautions when working with your BIOS.
It's best to go to the Dell site and where it says "Add or Edit Service Tag" put in the service tag number for your computer, this will bring up the drivers for your system.

Great info!!
Seems to have worked for them.
Working with the BIOS has always been critical. Too chicken.....I was having trouble with my CD/DVD burner and I "flashed" it...only to destroy it....Still debatable that that was the actual culprit. This sounds quite similar...except for the entire computer....Hmmmm...
Perhaps I will replace the battery first...it might still be under warr. and if they will replace.....
Then, it that doesn't work, I'll deal with the BIOS download.....
Still up for recommendations....

Hopefully the battery is still under warranty, then it wouldn't hurt to try the new battery. Let us know how that turns out please.
If it doesn't, maybe you can have a repair shop run the BIOS for you. Just remember the guy said the updated BIOS did not fix his problem, he had to run the original Bios download.

They are replacing the battery.
I checked the date of purchase and today is the 367th day.....Soooo....with GREAT trepidation, I called and they said that there is a 4 yr. warranty.
They asked me to start the computer from the "off" position AND with the battery removed. The verbage did NOT appear at start-up. SO they said they are mailing a new one.
Was also informed that "These batteries are only good for 1 year or so.."
SO...12-01-10 is marked to call for the same issue.....Who really knows....

I had a similar problem on my Inspiron 1501. I remembered I turned off my computer abruptly the last time I used it. Afterwards, at booting, the computer wouldn't recongnize my battery and gave the following message before any OS would load:
WARNING: the battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge the battery.
I solved the problem by using up my battery until the the screen would black out. Afterwards, I rebooted it (again without using the AC adaptor) and the system warned me of low battery - to press F1. After pressing F1, I plugged the AC adaptor back and tried rebooting. The problem was solved!

Thank you for your help. This had been happening to me for about 2 weeks and it was driving me crazy I tried this and it worked. I'm so glad as I didn't want to go into the bios as others said. I am self taught on computer so didn't have confidence to try anything too advanced in case I made a mess of everything.This is my first time replying to a forum but I was so pleased I got it fixed I just wanted to say thanks.

May be you haven't used up the hole battery (change the behavior of windows, so it does not shut down on criticle battery). This message (The one with F1) shows just before the Warning messege.
Any way I have (had) the same problem and this fix did not solved it. But Flashing the bios did the tric. 
So my advise is to first try this fix from matvez12

Have tried this solution and had no success. Flashing Bios helped me.

That was my posting very almost a year ago (1st Feb) the works laptop did exactly the same thing again yesterday!!!!
I repeated the trick to solve it once more!!!! (discharged battery COMPLETELY, rebooted (no ac power) laptop said to press F1, I did so and plugged AC power back in and all was well.......
